Chapter 4: Alarm

Here in Room 213, Reggie is grunting on top of me, pressing my face down to the carpet, and every fiber of my being is screaming to shut off again, to go away inside.

A moment ago, I might have given in. All this time I’ve been afraid I was wrong about the room number, the apartment, maybe everything. I was starting to think Christian and my son had both slipped from my grasp, and for a moment I’d begun to despair.

Now, even if I wanted to, I couldn’t give up.

Because I was right. This is the right apartment, Reggie does know Christian—and that means I still have a chance to help Troy. This gives me strength to endure the pain, to bide my time, to wait and listen. I make myself hear everything, see everything, feel everything. I refuse to miss even the slightest detail, the slightest clue that might lead me to my son.

Instead of hopeless, I feel impatient, frustrated by the time they’re wasting playing with me—when Troy could be getting further away. And my rage at Christian grows. I imagine him outside the apartment building right now, in the street, listening under the window, well-dressed and out of place in his suit jacket and slacks. Could he hear what was happening to me in Room 213—the rattling chain, the muffled moans, the rough laughter?

What would Christian think, if he could hear? Would he feel responsible? Would he understand the pain he’s caused, the danger he put me in when he took my baby away?

Would he even care?

By the time Reggie rolls off me, breathing hard and sweating and stinking of cheap whiskey, I’ve gone completely still. He naturally takes this for submission, slaps my bare ass and laughs. “That’s a good girl,” he says. “Jamal, you up next?”

Jamal is sitting on the couch, now, cutting fresh lines of coke on the coffee table with a knife. Not even looking over, he raises his eyebrows and shakes his head no.

The Arab moves forward, grinning hungrily. “It’s my turn then.”

“Hey, fuck you,” Reggie says. He gets to his feet and zips his pants back up, still looking at Jamal. “What’s wrong, bro? These the spoils of victory, man.”

“I’m good,” Jamal replies. He bends to sniff a line.

I lift my head subtly to look around the room, trying to plan my next move. Reggie’s huge handgun is still resting on the coffee table, several feet from me. I eye the others, waiting for the right moment, when they’re most distracted.

Then I feel a sudden tug around my throat as the choke chain squeezes. The slave girl Yulia leans against the wall above me, still holding the leash. She gazes down at me, her blank expression somehow knowing.

I go still again, gritting my teeth. I can’t do anything with my hands tied behind my back and this bitch hovering over me.

“All right, whatever,” Reggie says at last, stepping back and waving the Arab in. “You’re up, champ.”

Reggie heads back to the couch and the Arab looms above me, grinning.
